Location

Shinagawa has a bit of a split-personality. There is Shinagawa Station and the business district surrounding it, but that’s all technically located in the southern part of Minato Ward. In this article we are going to go over elements of both Shinagawa Station and Shinagawa Ward.

The Shinagawa business/commercial district is home to many company headquarters such as Sony, Rakuten, Lawson, Sega, and Japan Airlines. With so many large offices in the area, there is a lot of traffic around Shinagawa Station. In addition, Shinagawa is the location of one of the Immigration Bureau offices in Tokyo (the other is located near Tachikawa).

Some of the business and commercial atmosphere near the station blends into the surrounding area, but a large portion of this neighborhood is residential. You’ll find quite a few parks near the waterfront, helping give Shinagawa’s residential side a high degree of livability.

Orientation Around the Station

The Shinagawa JR Station is massive and intimidating, but there are only two main exits.

  • The Takanawa Exit (West Exit) will take you away from Tokyo Bay. Use this exit to get to the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa, Shinagawa Prince Hotel, Wing Takanawa West (shopping mall), and Maxell Aqua Park (aquarium).
  • If you take the Konan Exit (East Exit), you’ll exit facing Tokyo Bay. Those heading to the Immigration Bureau can head to bus stop 8 here and catch a bus to the building.

Corporate Headquarters

Shinagawa’s business district is home to many notable companies, both Japanese and international. In addition to the headquarters mentioned earlier, there are also offices for companies such as Adobe, Philips, and Microsoft in the area. The presence of these global companies near Shinagawa station gives the area a more international atmosphere compared to business districts like Shimbashi.

Maxell Aqua Park

One staple feature of Shinagawa is the Maxell Aqua Park aquarium, where you can find a variety of exhibits highlighting marine animals. The stars of the aquarium are the dolphins headlining the shows at the stadium. The intricately choreographed performances are exciting and fun to watch!

Tennozu Isle

An island just east of Shinagawa, Tennozu Isle was originally developed as a fort in the Edo period to protect against any seaborne invasions. After the Meiji Restoration and industrialization of Japan, the area became the site for various warehouses and factories. The first modern redevelopment projects on the island were completed around 1992. Today, Tennozu Isle is a destination for arts and culture with a beautiful view of Tokyo Bay. The scenery is used fairly regularly as the setting for movies and TV shows.

Upcoming Transportation Developments

Shinagawa Station was chosen as the future terminal station for the Chuo Shinkansen maglev line. This high-speed railway will initially connect Tokyo and Nagoya (with plans to continue the track to Osaka) once finished in 2027. With a maximum speed of 505 km/h (314 mph), the train ride is estimated to take 40 minutes from Tokyo to Nagoya (as of 2019, the current shinkansen route takes approximately 100 minutes).

Another transportation related update coming to the area near Shinagawa is the addition of the Takanawa Gateway Station. This will occur in Minato Ward, but it will have an affect on those residing close to Shinagawa Station. The Takanawa Gateway Station will be located on the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku Lines, between existing Shinagawa Station and Tamachi Station. The station is scheduled to be completed in 2020, with surrounding luxury apartments, restaurants, and facilities to be completed by 2024.

Shinagawa Shotengai

You’ll find a local slice of life near Shinagawa Station that contrasts with the global business and commercial side. The Musashi Koyama Shotengai (shopping arcade) is the longest shopping arcade in Tokyo. Next to it is Togoshi Ginza, the second longest shopping arcade in Tokyo! It can be relaxing to wander through one of these shopping arcades while keeping an eye out for any bargain deals!

Shopping arcades are a fixture of urban living in Japan. A lot of the stores that call these stretches of road home are family businesses which have weathered the storm of time and have become embedded in the fabric of the community. You’ll find grocers, kimono stores, and sweets shops mixed in with more modern establishments like cellphone stores and pachinko parlors.

Eating

Shinagawa has a reputable dining scene, thanks to all the redevelopment projects in the area. If you check out the commercial complexes around Shinagawa you can find restaurants like Table 9 Tokyo that offer a nice view of Tokyo and Tokyo Bay. Another fan favorite is T.Y. Harbor on Tennozu Isle. This is a fancy restaurant on the waterfront where you can get craft beer brewed right in Shinagawa! Or if you’re in the mood for more rustic Japanese soul-food, take a trip away from the bay to Tonkatsu Mitake near Oimachi for some authentic homestyle tonkatsu (breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet)! And lastly, you can stop by  Kyojin Stew House for Irish food. Who would’ve thought that Shinagawa would be a place where you can find authentic Irish lamb stew and colcannon!

Livability

Life in Shinagawa runs the gamut from commercial districts to calm residential neighborhoods. The neighborhoods themselves vary from the redeveloped, modern apartment complexes around Tennozu Isle and Shinagawa Station to the unassuming, quiet streets of Nishi-Oi and Musashi Koyama. With over five train lines going through Shinagawa Station, this is also a major hub, which means it rates very high for accessibility.

Shinagawa is also the first stop on the Tokaido shinkansen (bullet train) line from Tokyo Station to Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. The Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama trains run on this line.

Shinagawa enjoys a very convenient location between Tokyo, Yokohama and other major stops in Kanagawa prefecture . It’s even close to Haneda Airport, so frequent flyers might want to pay extra attention to the area. Useful Info at a Glance
