Location

The Tokyo Bay Area spans the waterfront portions of Tokyo’s Chuo, Shinagawa, Minato, and Koto Wards. Primarily built on reclaimed land, these neighborhoods are well-known for the clean, upscale living environment that also provides a beautiful view of Tokyo and Tokyo Bay. The redevelopment projects in these areas have added many luxury apartment complexes to the landscape, which has attracted young families to the area. This combination of new developments and young families gives certain neighborhoods a young, modern feel.

Livability

The sights from Tokyo Bay are just as famous as they are popular. Renowned for fantastic views of Tokyo and the waters of Tokyo Bay, these neighborhoods also offer residents plenty of conveniences in terms of livability. As a good amount of the housing options in this area are located in luxury apartment complexes, you can find apartments with daycare centers, concierge services, and gyms.

Certain parts of Tokyo Bay are also well-known as popular shopping and dining destinations. Odaiba is a premier example of this kind of waterfront shopping/entertainment district which is quite popular with couples looking for a romantic setting for a date. Other interesting attractions at Odaiba include a replica Statue of Liberty, a beach, and a ferris wheel (which once claimed the title of tallest ferris wheel in the world).

Areas like Kachidoki and Tsukishima are popular options for those commuting into Tokyo thanks to being located on the Toei Oedo Line. This gives residents a direct link to Roppongi and Azabu Juban. The clean look of the streets next to the water gives these neighborhoods a unique appeal compared to other residential areas in Tokyo.

All these conveniences being located on the reclaimed islands of Tokyo Bay kind of create an isolated atmosphere where at times it feels like “Tokyo” is so far away. Another reason for a feeling so close yet so far from Tokyo is that certain stations that are only serviced by the Yurikamome Line can be frustrating to commute on or use. The line is fairly slow compared to other subways and trains, and it has to make a large loop to pass over the Rainbow Bridge. This can make taking the line feel like a chore. A faster transportation solution is in the works: Tokyo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) will service the areas around Tokyo Bay starting September 2020. This will give residents a much quicker option for transportation (estimated travel time of roughly 10 minutes from Shimbashi to Harumi, just north of Ariake).
