Nagasaki

Nagasaki Prefecture is located in the southwest of Japan on the west coast of Kyushu island.

The Port of Nagasaki, one of Japan’s closest ports to the Asian mainland, gained particular importance during Japan’s period of national isolation, sakoku. During this time it was the only place in the entire country which was open to the rest of the worlld. Even today, many international cruise ships call at this port every year. This rich history is evident in the region’s architecture, food, and annual events.

The Nagasaki Tall Ships Festival is Japan’s only tall ship event and usually takes place at the end of April every year in the Port of Nagasaki.

Nagasaki has also witnessed tragic events, including the persecution of the Christians and later the atomic bombing of Nagasaki City in the second world war.

Nagasaki is abundant in mountainous land and a long coastline comprised of numerous peninsulas, capes, bays and inlets. Of the 47 prefectures of Japan, Nagasaki has the second longest coastline and the most islands. These islands make up over 45% of the prefecture’s total land area.

Climate

The climate in this part of Japan is generally mild and humid, due to the Pacific Ocean climate system to the east and the warm Tsushima current from the west. The average annual temperature is 17.5 degrees C,  with summer (August) high temperatures averaging 30 degrees C and winter (January) lows averaging 7 degrees C.

Access

It is about a two-hour flight from Haneda Airport (in Tokyo) to Nagasaki Airport, with frequent daily flights.

There is also regular air service between Shanghai and Pusan, Korea to Nagasaki. In fact, the distance between Seoul and Nagasaki is about half the distance between Tokyo-Narita Airport and Nagasaki., and the distance between Shanghai and Nagasaki is about three-quarters the distance between Tokyo-Narita Airport and Nagasaki.
