Good to know
- Many real estate agents in Japan do not speak English.
- A takken,宅地建物取引士(たくちたてものとりひきし), is a Real Estate Transaction Manager. This is a national-level Japanese real estate industry certification that is similar to a broker’s license in the United States, but requires a higher level of transaction and legal knowledge. Every real estate agency in Japan is required by law to have at least one takken on its payroll.
- An intermediary (chukai, 仲介) in Japan is allowed to introduce a buyer to a seller but has no legal authority to bind the seller. Only an agent is legally able to conclude a binding sales agreement directly with a buyer with respect to the seller’s property.
