IKEA to Open First Central Tokyo Store in Spring 2020 in Harajuku

IKEA Japan has announced that it will open its first central Tokyo store in Harajuku, to open for business in the spring of 2020.

In the Tokyo capital region, IKEA currently has stores in Funabashi (Chiba prefecture), Kohoku, Yokohama (Kanagawa prefecture), Tachikawa (a western suburb of Tokyo), and Misato (Saitama prefecture).

The new store will occupy 2,500-sqm of space in the “Harajuku Eki-mae Project” mixed-use building developed by NTT Urban Development Corp. and located about 1-minute from JR Harajuku station and about 1-minute from Meiji Jingumae Station (Harajuku) on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda line.

IKEA announced that the company’s first Tokyo city-center store is meant to make it more convenient for people  to access and experience shopping at its stores, but that in order to meet customer needs it also plans to continue promoting online shopping.
