Good to Know
- How to read a Japanese apartment floor plan (A detailed explanation of how to decipher a Japanese apartment floor plan)
- Apartment descriptions in Japan don’t tell you the number of bedrooms, but instead tell you the number of rooms in addition to the dining/kitchen and living room.
- R means “Room”
- K means “Kitchen”
- D means “Dining Room”
- L means “Living Room”
- Sometimes, you’ll see an “S” used in a room layout description, such as 1LDK+S. “S” stands for “Storage” which is a bonus storage room.
- These are the main room layout terms in Japan:
- 1R: One-room studio apartment
- 1K: One-room studio apartment with a kitchen that is usually separated from the other room by a wall.
- 1DK: Two room apartment with a kitchen and dining space that is separated from the other room.
- 1LDK: One-bedroom apartment with a living/dining room and a kitchen separate from the living/dining area.
- 2LDK: Two-bedroom apartment with a living/dining room and a kitchen separate from the living/dining area.
- 3LDK: Three-bedroom apartment with a living/dining room and a kitchen separate from the living/dining area.
- 4LDK: Four-bedroom apartment with a living/dining room and a kitchen separate from the living/dining area.
