  • English definition: Layout, as in room layout or floor plan

Good to Know

  • How to read a Japanese apartment floor plan (A detailed explanation of how to decipher a Japanese apartment floor plan)
  • Apartment descriptions in Japan don’t tell you the number of bedrooms, but instead tell you the number of rooms in addition to the dining/kitchen and living room.
  • R means “Room”
  • K means “Kitchen”
  • D means “Dining Room”
  • L means “Living Room”
  • Sometimes, you’ll see an “S” used in a room layout description, such as 1LDK+S. “S” stands for “Storage” which is a bonus storage room.
  • These are the main room layout terms in Japan:
  • 1R: One-room studio apartment
  • 1K: One-room studio apartment with a kitchen that is usually separated from the other room by a wall.
  • 1DK: Two room apartment with a kitchen and dining space that is separated from the other room.
  •  1LDK: One-bedroom apartment with a living/dining room and a kitchen separate from the living/dining area.
  • 2LDK: Two-bedroom apartment with a living/dining room and a kitchen separate from the living/dining area.
  • 3LDK: Three-bedroom apartment with a living/dining room and a kitchen separate from the living/dining area.
  • 4LDK:  Four-bedroom apartment with a living/dining room and a kitchen separate from the living/dining area.
