Renting an apartment in Japan

Super Budget-Friendly Apartments Near Tokyo: With no key money, no deposit, no agency fee

One of the ways to lower your monthly rent in Tokyo is to move just outside the city. In this article, we feature some super budget-friendly apartments for rent (starting from about $272 in Total Monthly Costs), with an hour or less commute to major Tokyo hubs like Shinjuku and Shibuya.

Also, none of these apartments require key money, an agency fee, or deposit, as these move-in costs can put a serious dent in your piggy bank.

One thing to know about renting an apartment in the summer months is that agents and landlords sometimes waive some or all of these fees, especially when they are trying to fill vacancies in the off-peak season (from about April to July). These fees can add at least three months’ rent to your move-in costs, so it pays to shop around.

Real Estate Japan currently lists over 1,374 properties in Tokyo’s 23 Wards with no deposit, no key money, no agency fee required. You can see the full list here.
